The Jerome E. Levy Book Collection

The Naval War College established its first endowed academic chair, the Capt. Jerome Eli Levy Chair of Economic Geography and National Security, with the support of Retired Navy Captain Levy. The chair supports a professor who teaches in the field of economic geography as it relates to national and international security.

Capt. Levy with CNO Adm. Jay L. Johnson

Captain Levy was born in Denver, Colorado on April 14, 1915. He graduated from the University of Colorado and received a graduate degree from the School of Business of Columbia  University.  In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy.

Captain Levy served as Executive Officer aboard the USS King (DD242) and participated in the retaking of Attu and Kiska islands; he was a staff member of COM 3 and served as liaison to the Chilean Navy.  He also served as Operations Officer aboard the USS Smalley (DD565).  He was Executive Officer aboard the USS VanValkenburgh (DD656) in Korea and then the Commanding Officer, sailing from Pearl Harbor to Midway, Yokosuka, Sasebo and Wonsan Harbor. Captain Levy served as Commander in the Naval Reserve of a division and battalion.

Among his commendations is the "Al Merito en grado Caballero" by Chile, and the Commendation Medal with V.  His name has also been inscribed on the Founders Wall of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

A member of the Explorers Club, Captain Levy was also a member of the Directors' Club of the University of Colorado.  He was the Founder and Chairman of the Anna Sobol Levy Foundation which funds fellowships at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Retired Captain Levy was a trustee and lifetime member of the Naval War College Foundation.  He chose the Foundation to receive the endowment because of the War College's mission to teach civilian and military leaders the concepts of national and international security.  He considered his crowning act of philanthropy the establishment of a chair in his name at the Naval War College. Captain Levy died in New York City on April 5, 2002.

Due to a generous gift from Captain Levy the Naval War College Library is the recipient of a donation which is funding a collection of books on economics, geography, geopolitics and security which support the Levy Chair.
